Summer on Mission: Week 10
This summer, we have been reminded again and again that the work of missions is both vast and deeply personal. Across the world, God is at work—in South Asia, in hard and difficult places where the Gospel is costly, in Africa, in El Salvador, in Nicaragua, among refugees and displaced families seeking safety and a new beginning, and in every single place we work in.
In these places we see the same call: to go, to serve, to strengthen the Church, to care for people in need, and to share the hope of Jesus.
Over the past several weeks, we have shared stories of missionaries and ministry leaders serving in challenging places. We have told you about the ongoing work in Africa, where local leaders are being equipped, communities are being strengthened, and practical needs are being met through sustainable development, discipleship, and training. We have shared about El Salvador, where pastors are being equipped with Bibles and resources to disciple their communities and where local leaders are faithfully serving their churches and neighbors. We have shared about South Asia and other hard places where believers are faithfully carrying the Gospel, often at great personal cost. And we have shared about Nicaragua, where we go again and again, fostering the many relationships we have made for 10+ years in the hope of sharing the Gospel of Jesus and His words in Matthew 25 that say: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”
We have also shared about our mission partners themselves, because caring for the ‘least of these’ also means caring for the people God has called to serve them. Missionaries and ministry leaders need prayer, encouragement, strength, endurance, practical support, and care. They carry the weight of difficult places, complicated needs, spiritual opposition, long separations from family, and the daily responsibility of serving others. Missionary care is not separate from the work of missions—it is part of it.
The truth is that the need around the world continues to grow, while the cost of serving continues to rise.
The cost of living and travel have increased dramatically. Housing, food, transportation, healthcare, ministry supplies, and everyday operating expenses are all more expensive than they were just a few years ago. At the same time, the nonprofit sector has experienced a continued decline in the number of individual donors. In 2025, the number of donors in the United States declined another 3.6 percent, continuing a trend that began in 2021, post-pandemic. While total charitable giving increased, much of that growth came from larger gifts, meaning that many organizations are increasingly dependent on fewer and fewer donors. It is sustained by the faithful partnership of people who believe that the Church is called to go wherever God sends us and to care for those who are hurting, vulnerable, overlooked, and in need.
Mission work is happening every day:
A missionary is serving in a difficult place.
A pastor is being equipped to disciple his community.
A family is receiving help as they rebuild their lives.
A local leader is being trained.
A child is being cared for.
A community is receiving clean water.
A church is being strengthened.
Someone who feels forgotten is reminded that they are seen, loved, and not alone.
